Q. What is the present mill rate?
A. The mill rate for the 2005 Grand List is 35.90 Town and 1.15 Fire District.
Q. What does the Mill Rate mean?
A. For every $1,000 of assessment you pay $37.05. Example: If your motor vehicle is assessed at $1,500 your taxes would be $55.58.
Q. When are taxes due and what time frame does it cover?
A. Real Estate taxes over $100.00 are due in two installments. The first half is due July 1st and the second half is due January 1st. These taxes cover from July 1st through June 30th.
Personal Property taxes over $100.00 are due in two installments. The first half is due July 1st and the second half is due January 1st. These taxes cover being in business October 1st of the previous year.
Regular Motor Vehicle taxes are due in one installment on July 1st. These taxes cover October 1st of the previous year through September 30th of the current year.
Supplemental Motor Vehicle taxes are due in one installment January 1st. These taxes cover from when the vehicle was registered through September 30th of the previous year.
Q. Payments By Mail or Payments in Person?
A. If a receipt is desired, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope and the entire bill, to:

If no receipt is desired just send Part B in July and Part C in January. If you are paying in person, please bring the entire bill.

Q. When are Sewer Use Bills due and what time frame does it cover?
A. They are due July 1st and cover July 1st to June 30th of the next year. Example: Bill is due July 1, 2006 that covers July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007. For additional information on your sewer use billing, please contact the Water Pollution Control at (860) 658-3258.
Q. How is interest calculated?
A. Interest accrues at 1 ½ % per month back to the original due date and is applied the 1st day of each month in accordance with Connecticut General Statue 12-146. Interest is applied to the outstanding principal amount only.
Late is late. The State of Connecticut does not allow anyone to waive interest no matter what the reason is for late payment.
Q. Can I pay all my taxes on one check?
A. Yes. You may pay all of your taxes on one check, however, be sure to reference all the list numbers on the memo line of your check, or send check with all bills.
Q. What if I received a bill that I escrow taxes for?
A. Immediately forward the bill to your lender. Then contact your lender and have them request that we send all future bills directly to them.
Q. What if I received a tax bill for real estate that I no longer own?
A. Please notify the tax collector at (860) 658-3238.
Q. How are my taxes calculated?
A. Your taxes are calculated as follows: your assessment x mill rate = taxes. For additional information on the calculation of your bill please visit the Assessor’s office web page, or call the assessor office at (860) 658-3251.
Q. Are there tax reduction programs for elderly residents and low income?
A. Yes, but income, age and other eligibility requirements must be met. Please contact the Assessor’s Office for more information at (860) 658-3251.
