BAA NOTICE
Simsbury property owners are reminded that the Board of Assessment Appeals will be meeting at the Town Office Building on March 24-26, 2009, to hear assessment appeals. The Board will hear appeals from homeowners, commercial property owners, owners of business personal property and automobile owners.
Appeals must be filed with the Town Assessor’s Office by Friday, February 20, 2009.
Business personal property is assessed in accordance with the schedule required to be filed with the Assessor’s office.
Automobiles are assessed as of the October 1, 2008 grand list date.
Real properties are assessed as of October 1, 2007, the last town-wide revaluation date.
Appellants should be aware that, pursuant to Connecticut State statutes:
1. A downturn in the economy, resulting in a decrease in market values of homes since the last revaluation date, is not a basis upon which an appellate relief can be awarded by the Board; and
2. Minutes of the Board of Assessment Appeals must now be made available to the general public by posting them on the town website. Accordingly, appellants should understand that all appeals will be listed on the website in a form substantially similar to the following:

Taxpayers who wish to appeal their assessments on property must appear before the board personally or by their authorized agent.
The Board of Assessment Appeals will meet in March 2009 to hear appeals of assessments on the October 1, 2008 grand list, including real estate, personal property and motor vehicles. ~The Board can also hear appeals of assessments on the 2007 Supplemental Motor Vehicle list.
Anyone wishing to appeal must file a petition for appeal with the Board of Assessment Appeals. ~The petition must be in the assessor's office (as staff for the Board of Assessment Appeals) by the close of business on February 20, 2009.
The board will meet on September 9, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. to hear appeals of motor vehicle assessments only. Petition forms are available from the assessor’s office and should be returned there by August 28, 2009 to schedule a hearing. ~
