Call to Order

A special meeting of the Culture, Parks and Recreation Commission was called to order at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Meeting Room of the Town Hall.

Forest Management Plan

Gerry Toner discussed the Forest Management Program that the Department had originally initiated in 1989.  It was his intent that the program be re-activated, and a number of parcels of town-owned land included in the management plan.  The program is run on a self-sustaining basis, and funding is included in the proposed FY 2008/09 budget.

A motion was made by Mary Liljedahl and seconded by Joe Grace to endorse the re-initiation of the Forest Management Program to include Onion Mountain Park, the Ethel Walker Woods Property, and any other parcels that would benefit from this management program.  The endorsement is consistent with the memo from Gerry Toner, dated April 29, 2008, and should include the review and approval of the Conservation Commission.  The motion passed unanimously.

Simsbury Farms Memorial

Gerry informed the commission that Nicolai “Kip” Sowpel recently passed away.  Kip was a long time Simsbury resident who established the SHS Girls Ice Hockey program.  Gerry reported that Kip’s family indicated that they would like to make a donation to some sort of memorial in one of the town parks.  John Pendergast had suggested that something at the Simsbury Farms Ice Rink would be appropriate.
A motion was made by David Bush and seconded by Joe Grace that an appropriate memorial plaque honoring the contributions of Nicolai “Kip” Sowpel be placed at the Simsbury Farms Ice Rink.  The motion passed unanimously.

Respectfully submitted,

Gerard G. Toner
