Town of Simsbury
Press Release
October 9, 2009
The Town of Simsbury has been awarded a $200,000 grant through the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) for completion of paving, landscaping and lighting of a secondary access road at the Simsbury Farms Recreation Complex. The Simsbury Farms Recreation Complex is located at 100 Old Farms Road, Simsbury. The Complex was constructed in 1972 with one road that travels past the pool and playground areas to the golf course clubhouse.
Since that time, play has increased at the golf course from 20,000 to 40,000 rounds annually. Over 30% of those visiting the course are non-residents, with little knowledge of the youth activities administered at the Complex. The increased usage at the pools with lessons and related camp programs has created a traffic and safety concern. In 2002, the town invested $1.2 million in a new golf clubhouse and restaurant. The Town’s Fire Marshall has expressed concern that access to the building could be compromised if there was a traffic problem or accident on the current access road.
First Selectman Mary Glassman stated that, “This funding will provide for the completion of the project which will create a safer environment at the complex. The addition of the new road will alleviate traffic where youngsters are in a congested area. It would also free up additional parking spaces which will relieve the current overcrowding of parked cars.” Representative Linda Schofield stated that, “I am pleased that the State of Connecticut is a partner in this important project and I look forward to its completion.”
It is anticipated that the project will be completed in the spring of 2010.
