APPLICATIONS

Application #16-01 of Patricia Hyyppa, Owner, for a Certificate of Appropriateness for the replacement of the existing shingles with Timberline architectural shingles for the residence on the property located at 42 East Weatogue Street (Assessor’s Map H14, Block 109, Lot 020). Zone R-40. (received 04/13/2016; decision must be rendered by 06/17/2016)

Mrs. Hyyppa proposed replacing shingles on her 1860’s house roof which are exactly the same as on the property’s horse barn approved by the Commission 3 years ago – the same design, color, etc.; everything else on the house remains the same.  She noted the only change was that these would be architectural shingles and other shingles on the house are 3 tab.  Commissioner Laschever indicated the structural difference is that with 3 tab one sheet is notched to look like 3 sections and with architectural a series of shingles are overlaid to get the look of a wood shingle, which looks much better than 3 tab and has greater longevity.  Regarding the siding on the dormers, Mrs. Hyyppa confirmed aluminum siding was put on some time ago; Commissioner Laschever observed because of that aluminum siding on the dormer sides, the contractor should assure the shingles are properly flashed.

Commissioner Laschever made a motion to approve Application #16-01, Application for a Certificate of Appropriateness on behalf of Patricia Hyyppa, for the replacement of the existing shingles with Timberline architectural shingles of the roof for the residence located at 42 East Weatogue Street, subject to the following conditions:  1) The replacement shingles shall be Timberline architectural shingles; 2) Color of the replacement shingles shall be “weathered wood”; 3) A Building Permit is required for the replacement of the roof; Applicant is responsible for securing the appropriate approvals prior to start of renovation; and 4) Approval for Certificate of Appropriateness is only valid for one year.  All work associated with said approval must be completed within approval period.

Commissioner Rodney seconded the motion, and it was passed unanimously.

Chairperson Mead confirmed with Staff that there were no other matters before the Commission.
