Hiking Trails

Hiking:  The Metacomet Trail, named after a local Native American chief, runs from Meriden, CT to Lake Sunapee, NH, including the entire length of Simsbury.  The views from this ridge line trail are spectacular, especially from Heublein Tower, which was built in the 1914 by a local industry magnate (a liquor distiller) as a summer home.  Tours of the tower are free.  On warm summer days with mild breezes you may see hang-gliders taking off from the cliffs near Heublein Tower and riding the thermals.  To get to Heublein Tower, take Route 185 to the park entrance, Park along the road near the trailhead. Hike to the ridge and bear left to the tower. For maps and information on hiking the Metacomet trail, contact the CT Forest & Park Association: (860) 346-2372 or www.ctwoodlands.org .
