Did you know...?

…that Connecticut began licensing dogs back in the 1800’s.  In 1855, Simsbury issued licenses for dogs.  According to the 1871 Town Report, the Simsbury Treasurer received $36.00 for registered dogs.

Farmers often could not identify a dog that injured or killed their livestock.  The Connecticut legislature passed a law that required owners purchase a license and tag for their dogs.  That way, an errant dog owner could be identified to provide restitution.

Nowadays, owners must license any dog that is 6-months old or older.  Your local  Town Clerk's Office issues dog licenses.  Dog licensing continues to provide a safe environment for our community.  In order to receive a license, owners must present a certificate showing their dog received a vaccination against the Rabies virus.

Oh, and owners continue to be responsible for any injury to livestock caused by their dogs, or damage to property, or injury to people.
