Referendum Questions Pass with Overwhelming Support

At the referendum on May 4, 2021, the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 budget was approved.  This includes the Board of Selectmen and Board of Education operating budgets, and the following capital projects: berm improvements at the Water Pollution Control Facility; Latimer Lane renovation; and the acquisition of Meadowood.  Voter turnout was 3,471, or 18.5 percent.  Click here for the full voting results.

As previously noted, referendum question #6 on the acquisition of the Meadowood  property had a misaligned answer field on the printed ballot, causing it to be unseen by the optical scanner. This formatting issue only impacted question #6; all other ballot questions were correctly printed.  Question #6 was tabulated by a bi-partisan hand count, including the Democratic and Republican Registrars of Voters. Questions #1-5 were correctly read by the optical scanner and all results have now been finalized, including question #6.

“The results of this referendum were never in question,” said Deputy First Selectman Sean Askham. “This technical issue simply led to a different process for counting the ballots.  All votes were captured, and the votes on the Meadowood question were counted by hand.”

First Selectman Eric Wellman expressed his gratitude to both the election officials as well as the voters for their engagement in this process. “I am so thankful for the hard work of our Registrars of Voters and Town Clerk for their quick and accurate resolution to this matter.  I also want to thank all of the voters of Simsbury who took the time to participate in the democratic process.”
