Simsbury Parks Superintendent Named Parks Maintenance Professional of the Year

Orlando Casiano, Parks Superintendent for the Simsbury Culture, Parks, and Recreation Department, was named the 2021 Parks Maintenance Professional of the Year by the Connecticut Recreation and Parks Association (CRPA).  This award is given to an individual who demonstrates a commitment to the profession, implements innovative or cost-effective ideas, cultivates a positive work environment, and who has been in the recreation and/or parks field in Connecticut for five years or more.

“Orlando is one of the most hard-working and dedicated team members I have ever worked with,” said Town Manager Maria Capriola. “He has a strong passion for and takes great pride in his work.  He always goes above and beyond, tirelessly providing a high level of service to our town.”

Mr. Casiano began his service with the Town of Simsbury in November of 1988.  He was initially hired as a parks mechanic, was later promoted to parks foreman, and has serve in his current role as Parks Superintendent for the last 25 years. Mr. Casiano is responsible for the maintenance of all Town parks and playgrounds, the Simsbury Farms complex, Simsbury Meadows, the multi-use trail network, open space areas, and the school athletic fields. He oversees nine employees and a budget of $1 million.

An employee who leads by example and demonstrates an unrivaled knowledge and pride in his work.” said Selectman Chris Peterson, Board of Selectmen liaison to Culture, Parks, and Recreation.  “In a community where our recreational opportunities and parks infrastructure are among our most desirable assets, his dedication to continuous improvement, his exceptional customer service skills and his pure capabilities have no limits.”

In her nomination letter to the CRPA Awards Committee, Town Manager Maria Capriola described Mr. Casiano’s many accomplishments in his 33 years of service to the Town.  Most recently, he was instrumental in completing the Town’s Parks and Open Space Master Plan, and played a key role in the process that led to the acquisition of Meadowood property. He continuously looks for new and innovative ways to improve our parks infrastructure, such as the recent planting of a number of pollinator pathway gardens, and the modification of parks and open space maintenance practices to create a more pollinator friendly habitat.  Of note are Orlando’s incredible customer service skills.  He has a strong ability to problem solve and consistently provides a positive experience for citizens interfacing with the Town.

Mr. Casiano will be presented with his award at the 61st Annual CRPA Conference & Tradeshow on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Mohegan Sun.  Congratulations to Orlando Casiano for this well-deserved recognition!
