Winter Wind Storm Update - March 2, 2021

The Town of Simsbury experienced a significant wind storm last night and into the day today.  There was widespread tree damage, resulting in a significant number of power outages and closed roads. Our Public Works Department worked throughout the day removing debris and clearing roads where downed wires weren’t involved.

Eversource has been working in Town throughout the day to restore power.  Priority has been given to restoring circuits that will provide power to the most customers as soon as possible.  At this point, there just under 200 residential homes in town without power.  Eversource representatives are working closely with Emergency Operations Center staff and have committed to keeping restoration crews in Simsbury.  Power restoration efforts will continue overnight.

If you are currently experiencing a power outage please contact Eversource. You can use the Eversource website to report a power outage. You can also call 800-286-2000 to report a power outage. The Town of Simsbury has reported downed wires and road blockages to Eversource.

With forecasted cold temperatures overnight, residents without power should consider seeking shelter with close friends or family members if the temperatures in your home become unsafe, with face coverings and other COVID protocols recommended where possible.  If this is not an option for you, you may wish to consider seeking shelter in a hotel for the night.  If you have power, please consider checking in on friends and neighbors to be sure they are safe.

Residents are reminded not to bring barbeque grills or other outdoor heating systems into their home due to the dangers associated with potentially fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.  For residents using generators, please ensure they are installed and functioning properly.  Tips for generator safety can be found here; Eversource offers the following suggestions:

  • Always run the generator outdoors and as far from the house as possible.
  • Make sure the generator is kept away from doors, windows and air vents to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Installing a carbon monoxide detector in your home can help warn you of a buildup of these toxic fumes.
  • Gasoline is highly flammable. Be sure that the generator is turned off before adding fuel.

We want to remind residents to please respect road closure signs. Please do not remove any barricades.  They are posted and placed for your safety so you do not encounter any downed trees and/or power lines which could potentially be dangerous. Please remember to keep a safe distance from any power lines that have fallen due to the storm.

Currently, our emergency operations center (EOC) is open and operating virtually. The virtual EOC allows us to keep in contact with regional and state emergency management officials. Key staff members of Emergency Services are meeting regularly to ensure the quickest possible recovery for Simsbury.

Be safe and be well.
