Changes to Some Speed Limits on Some Local Roads

October 4, 2016

The Simsbury Police Department recently completed an audit of all of the posted speed limits within the Town of Simsbury.

The Office of the State Traffic Administration (OSTA) performs an engineering investigation on all roadways that a Local Traffic Authority wishes to establish a speed limit on.  The principal factors considered are:

  • Road type and surface (curve, hill, etc.)
  • Location and type of access points (intersections, entrances, etc.)
  • Existing traffic control devices (signs, signals, etc.)
  • Accident history
  • Traffic volume
  • Sight distances
  • Test drive results
  • Radar observations

The Simsbury Highway Department has begun the process of installing signage on the roadways identified in the audit.  Most of our roadways will not see any change in their signage.

The handful of roadways that require a change in the posted speed limit will be altered one at a time.  Temporary signs stating “new sign installed”, will be in place in areas that require a change in the posted speed limit as the new signage is installed.

If you have any questions please contact Sergeant Matthew Christian 860-658-3115.
