Household Hazardous Waste Collection

The Town of Simsbury, in collaboration with our surrounding communities, holds collections for household hazardous waste a few times a year. Some examples of items that would be accepted at these collections include, but are not limited to:

  • common household batteries
  • fluorescent and CFL bulbs
  • items containing mercury (thermometers, thermostats, etc.)
  • household chemicals
  • used motor oil

In addition, you can bring up to 2 copy paper size boxes of papers to be shredded at the event.

When attending these collection events, please bring identification providing proof of residency and remain in your vehicle. The event attendants will provide further instructions on where and how to dispose of the items you have brought with you.

Lines can be long at these collection events. Some items, like CFL bulbs, paint, and used motor oil, can be brought to other facilities for recycling without having to wait for these events. There is more information on PaintCare, a paint recycling program, in the schedule posted below. Stores like Lowes, Home Depot and Target have collection boxes for CFL bulbs, rechargeable batteries, and small electronics. Additionally, many automotive parts stores will accept used motor oil. The Town's Bulky Waste and Recycling facility at 66 Wolcott Road also takes many of these items. These might be better alternatives for you if you only have a few items of which you need to dispose.

We have completed all Household Hazardous Waste Collections for 2023. The schedule for 2024 and further information can be found below:
