Getting Married in Simsbury? How to obtain a Marriage License

GETTING MARRIED IN SIMSBURY?   

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage! To facilitate the process, we have put together the following steps with instructions on what must be completed before obtaining a Marriage License and before setting an appointment in the Town of Simsbury. APPOINTMENTS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL MARRIAGE LICENSE REQUESTS. NO WALK-INS.  

THE WORKSHEET AND INFORMATION FOUND BELOW MUST BE EMAILED to townclerk@simsbury-ct.gov BEFORE OBTAINING THE APPOINTMENT FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE: 

1. A completed Marriage License Worksheet (found as an attachment below - the form is a fillable PDF which can be completed in a TYPED format or, alternatively, please PRINT legibly and attach to your email). For the sake of cybersecurity, please DO NOT provide social security numbers on the worksheet.  You will be asked to provide Social Securities for both spouses at the time you set up your appointment. Also, please do not complete the bottom portion of the worksheet.

In the body of your email include: 

2. Date of the Marriage;

3. Name, Address, Phone number, and Capacity of the Officiator (Clergy, Minister, Reverend, Justice of the Peace, Pastor, etc.);

4. Location and Address of where the marriage will take place in Simsbury.

Please follow each step thoroughly as we will not schedule your appointment until all necessary information is received.

Once we receive your information, we will email you back within 24 hours (not including weekends or holidays) to confirm that we have the necessary information and you are set to schedule your appointment to obtain the marriage license. PLEASE CALL 860-658-3243 TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. All appointments will be scheduled (7) business days out from the date we receive the required information.  

PLEASE NOTE: A valid-unexpired photo ID for both Spouse 1 and Spouse 2 (i.e., Driver's License, Passports, or other government-issued photo ID) MUST be provided at the time of the appointment along with your social security numbers. Please be sure to BRING those IDs with you and have your social security numbers available. 

Keep in mind:

  • A Marriage License must be obtained from the Town Clerk’s office in the TOWN OF OCCURRENCE (The Town where the marriage is taking place)
  • Marriage Licenses are valid for 65 days from the date of issuance
  • Both parties MUST COME IN PERSON and present a valid-unexpired photo ID

Our office can assist you in obtaining your Marriage License during our regular business hours. Our first available appointment is 9:00 a.m., and our last available appointment is 30 minutes before closing time.

8:30 – 7:00 Monday

8:30 - 4:30 Tuesday through Thursday

8:30 – 1:00 Friday

PAYMENT

The cost is $50.00 for the license and $20.00 for each certified copy of the Marriage Certificate which is necessary for changing the last name, insurance, ID/Driver’s License, Passport, etc.  We accept payment by cash, check, or credit card. (*Please note that effective 3/26/23, use of a credit/debit card for payment will incur a convenience fee of 2.99%, with a minimum fee of $3.95. This fee is collected by the credit card vendor, InvoiceCloud, and not by the Town of Simsbury.)

DIVORCE

How to File for a Divorce

You may file for a divorce in the judicial district where you live or where your spouse lives. If your spouse resides out of state, file the case in the judicial district serving your town. In the Town of Simsbury, residents should file for divorce in the Hartford Judicial District (Family Division) located at 90 Washington Street in Hartford. They can be reached at 860-706-5100.

How to Request a Divorce Decree

To obtain a copy of your Divorce Decree you must request it from the Superior Court where the divorce was granted. View the Directory of Superior Courts https://www.jud.ct.gov/directories.htm. Please call the appropriate court for fees and requirements.

PROBATE COURT

The Regional Probate Court located at 933 Hopmeadow St. Simsbury, serves the towns of Avon, Canton, Granby, and Simsbury, Connecticut; with jurisdiction over a variety of family matters including the administration of estates, the appointment of guardian of minors, appointment of guardian of the intellectually disabled, appointments of conservator for the incapacitated, and the approval of adoptions.
