Meeting Minutes
Chairperson Edward LaMontagne called the meeting to order at 7:08 p.m. in the Youth Room, Eno Memorial Hall, Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury.
Present: Edward LaMontagne, Victor Bible, Mona Herman, Mike Jennings, Marvin Koff, Peggy Shanks, Charlotte Steptoe, Lynn Veith, Diana Yeisley, Kathleen Marschall, (Senior Center Coordinator), Shannon Knall (Board of Selectmen Liaison)
Excused: Grace Comeau, Kathie Fallon, Mary Ellen Long, Mona Martinik, Mark Orienstein, Arlene Zappile, Ron Zappile, Arpit Dave (Student Liaison)
PUBLIC AUDIENCE: There were no members from the public in attendance.
MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING:
The meeting minutes of 21 May 2013 were approved.
PROGRAM/SUB COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Souper Tuesday
The last Souper Tuesday event of the season was held last Tuesday with 72 attendees.
The Civitan Club served. Edna was recognized for providing table decorations for each
Souper Tuesday event.
Citizen Service Award
The event will be held July 8th due to a change in the BOS meeting schedule.
Public Relations
Several articles were published in local newspapers, along with the Simsbury Patch,
regarding handicapped parking awareness month. Mr. Jennings, Mr. LaMontagne and
State Representative Hampton are planning, along with a representative from the
Simsbury Police Department, to tape a program at SCTV.
Picnic In The Park
Ms. Steptoe presented the latest update on the status of the plans for the event, which
will be held on Saturday, August 24th at St. Catherine of Siena Church. Bob Kane and
the band are secured. Mr. Bible will coordinate publicity.
SENIOR CENTER REPORT:
Dial A Ride will now be asking participants to donate $25.00 for one person and $35.00
for two people to obtain an annual pass. Applications are available at the Social Services
Department and become effective on July 1st. Ms. Marschall shared the menus for
Wednesday and Friday Marion Strindberg Memorial Lunches. A cardio plus class will start
this month.
STUDENT LIAISON REPORT
A new student liaison will be appointed in the fall. Mr. LaMontagne will send Mr. Dave a
thank you letter for his service on the Commission.
OLD BUSINESS
Senior/Community Center Update
A Community Forum was held on 6/10/13 prior to the Board of Selectman meeting. Over
fifty people attended and sixteen spoke offering a variety of comments regarding the three
options for a new senior center. Several commission members attended and spoke.
Handicapped Parking Awareness Month
The BOS designated June as handicapped awareness month. The Police Chief has
appointed an officer to be a liaison and the Police Department developed an
informational poster, which is on the town website. Sen. Witkos attached an amendment
to an airbag bill stating that police shall issue a violation or summons when someone
improperly parks in a handicapped space. The bill passed the House and Senate
unanimously. It is awaiting the governor’s signature.
Accessible Housing
Mr. LaMontagne shared that that Ken Regan met with Focus and FAVARH regarding the
new accessible housing in Dorsett Crossing. A tenant selection plan is in process.

There was no other old business conducted.
NEW BUSINESS
Financial Update
Mr. LaMontagne shared the current reconciliations. The Simsbury Lions Club donated
$400.00 for Souper Tuesday. The Simsbury Granby Rotary will also be making a
donation. The town fund is at net zero. $1,500.00 has been approved by the town for
FY 2014 starting July 1, 2013.
Souper Tuesday Funding Program
Ms. Yeisley will be working with Mr. LaMontagne on procuring sponsors for the 2013-14
Souper Tuesday events starting in September.

There was no other new business conducted.

There being no further business a motion was made by Dr. Koff to adjourn the meeting and
seconded by Peggy Shanks. The meeting was adjourned at 8:53 pm.
