CHET Advantage College Scholarships Available to High School Seniors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 9, 2013

CHET Advance College Scholarships Available to High School Seniors

High school seniors are eligible to seek $2,500 scholarships to cover college expenses through a program launched last week by State Treasurer Denise L. Nappier.  The program – CHET Advance Scholarship  - will hold random drawings totaling $500,000 to provide up to 200 Connecticut high school seniors with the scholarships.  Applications to participate in the drawings will be accepted online at www.chetadvance.com beginning at 8:00 a.m. on September 16 and ending on October 4 at 5:00 p.m.

All seniors who attend a public, private or parochial Connecticut high school are eligible to participate in the program.  To ensure that there are winners from across the state, no more than 40 winners will be selected from each of Connecticut’s five Congressional Districts.  One hundred of the awards are reserved for seniors who attend a Review or Turnaround high school (schools which receive focused resources to improve the performance of students).

Citing statistics showing that nearly 70 percent of families dropped schools from consideration because of costs during the application process, Nappier explained that the goal of the program is “to bring college within reach and reduce the financial burden on graduates and their families.”   CHET Advance is administered under the Connecticut Higher Education Trust.  More information on the program can be found at www.chetadvance.com.  Simsbury students and parents can also obtain more information on the program by contacting the Guidance Office at the High School ((860) 658-0451, extension 439).
