TCBY Yogurt to Donate 10 Percent of Sales to Sandy Hook School Support Fund

Residents and businesses in our community continue to do everything they can to make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in times of need.  The most recent demonstration of community support comes from Lisa and Mark Arnold and their business, TCBY Yogurt.  The Arnolds are committed to donating 10 percent of the sales of TCBY Yogurt – through January 26, 2012 – to the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.  Actions like this from the Arnolds, in addition to helping with significant financial challenges, lets the Newtown community know how much we all care.  My thanks to Lisa and Mark, and to many others in Simsbury who are doing their part to show support for Newtown in this very difficult time.

Free Fruits and Vegetables Available from Foodshare

Farmington Valley families struggling to make ends meet can participate in a “farmer’s market” style program called Mobile Foodshare which will distribute fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as other perishables, on alternate Monday afternoons throughout the year beginning on January 21, 2013.  Our Social Services Department is collaborating with Foodshare to bring the Mobile Foodshare program to Simsbury. I would like to thank Social Services Director Mickey Lecours-Beck and volunteers at First Church of Christ for their initiative on this project.  Families wishing to participate should bring their own bags to the First Church of Christ at 689 Hopmeadow Street from 1:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Monday afternoon, January 21 and on every other Monday thereafter.  If you have questions about the program, please contact Social Services at (860) 658-3283.

UConn to Hold Hearing on Water Supply Options, Including Diversion of Water from the Farmington River

The Town of Simsbury remains concerned about a proposal to divert water away from the Farmington River to address a growing need for water at UConn’s Storrs campus and surrounding communities, including Mansfield.  Residents interested in participating in a hearing on the issue are encouraged to attend the hearing scheduled on Tuesday, January 22nd at 7 p.m. in the Human Resources Training Room at the UConn Health Center’s Munson Building, 16 Munson Road, Farmington.  The Farmington Valley Collaborative, which includes representatives from Simsbury, Avon, Farmington, Granby, Burlington and East Granby, will meet this week to ensure that our communities and their concerns about the proposal are represented at the hearing.

The Hartford Closes its Sale of Retirement Business to MassMutual

The Town of Simsbury has requested a meeting with officials at The Hartford to discuss the long term plans of the Simsbury facility. Representatives from The Hartford said they will provide a date shortly to meet with the Simsbury subcommittee created to address the needs of Simsbury’s largest taxpayer. The Town was informed on Friday that the Hartford has completed its sale of the retirement business to MassMutual, and that employees working in the retirement business will be moved out of Simsbury to MassMutual offices in Enfield.  The Hartford continues to employee a significant number of employees here in Simsbury and we have asked representatives from The Hartford to meet again to ensure that every effort is made not only to keep those employees here in Simsbury, but to grow The Hartford’s presence here.  The Hartford was very intentional about locating its business operations in Simsbury, and we will make sure they understand that our commitment to supporting the business community here is stronger than ever.
