Simsbury Groups Unveil History Walk: 350 Years of Simsbury in 350 Steps

The Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center, Simsbury Historical Society, Simsbury Free Library and the 350th Anniversary Committee today launched “350 years of Simsbury History in 350 Steps,” a History Walk on Iron Horse Boulevard, sponsored by Big Y. “The Simsbury History Walk brings 350 years of Simsbury alive,” said Cheryl Cook and Kris Barnett, co-chairs of Simsbury’s 350th Anniversary Committee. “We even created an historic Hunt for History treasure hunt with prizes from Big Y supermarket and the 350th Committee.”

The History Walk is a tenth of a mile long, featuring more than 100 historic photos, graphics, key dates, and fun facts on the history of Simsbury and, in the larger framework, the history of our country.  First Selectman Eric Wellman said, “We are thrilled to present this fun and unique way to engage the community and spotlight our rich history.  I am grateful to everyone who worked hard to produce this special addition to our 350th celebrations.”

The History Walk begins at the entrance to the Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center, and runs north along the path on Iron Horse Boulevard.  “We are proud to partner with the Simsbury Historical Society, Simsbury Free Library and the 350th Anniversary Committee,” said Missy DiNunno, Executive Director of the Performing Arts Center. “We’re more than a stage. We’re the community’s art and performance canvas.”  In addition to Big Y Foods, Inc, the Simsbury History Walk is sponsored by Liberty Bank, Mitchell Auto Group, and Elkinson + Sloves, Inc., who conceived and designed the History Walk.  The 350th Anniversary celebration is sponsored by Presenting Sponsors Big Y Foods, Inc. and Dornenburg Kallenbach Advertising and Co-Presenting Sponsors Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense and Vincent Funeral Homes, Inc.

The year 2020 marks the 350th anniversary of the founding of Simsbury.  The 350th Anniversary Committee, in partnership with many other community organizations, is coordinating a series of events to honor Simsbury’s rich history, celebrate its present, and imagine the possibilities for its future.  To learn more about the 350th Anniversary celebrations, the History Walk, and the “Hunt for History” treasure hunt, visit http://simsbury350.com/.
