Thomas Tyburski Selected as Town of Simsbury’s Culture, Parks and Recreation Director

On Wednesday, May 30, 2018 the Simsbury Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to make a conditional offer of employment to Thomas Tyburski to serve as the Town of Simsbury’s next Culture, Parks and Recreation Director. “We are thrilled to appoint Tom to the position of Culture, Parks and Recreation Director and to welcome him to our team,” said Town Manager Maria Capriola. “He demonstrates a strong passion and commitment to his work that will serve the department, the organization and the community well.”

Tyburski currently serves as the Parks and Recreation Director for the Town of Granby, where he has served in that capacity for seven years. Prior to his tenure in Granby, he worked as a recreation supervisor with the Town of Simsbury for twelve years and as an assistant operations manager of the International Skating Center of Connecticut for two years.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in recreation management from Springfield College, and is a certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP).

“Tom has distinguished himself as a leader in the field of recreational services, and he will bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to this leadership position,” said David Bush, Chairman of the Culture, Parks and Recreation Commission. “The Commission looks forward to working with him as he builds on a strong tradition of providing quality parks, recreational services, and leisure opportunities for our community.”  Selectman Chris Peterson, who serves as liaison to the Culture, Parks and Recreation Commission, concurred. “As a testament to the character and desirability of Simsbury, we received numerous applications for this position, many from long-time established professionals. Learning about Tom, three points really spoke to me: his early career experience with the Town of Simsbury mentoring under Gerry Toner, a clear understanding of the Board of Selectmen’s concerns around program cost recovery, and an enthusiasm for what Culture, Parks and Recreation means not only today but also in the years to come.  The Commission, Board of Selectmen and Town Manager join in lauding Gerry Toner for his years of service and welcoming Tom to our town.”

According to the Town Charter, the Town Manager consults with the Culture, Parks and Recreation Commission prior to appointing the Director, and final appointing authority for the position rests with the Board of Selectmen.  At a meeting on May 24, 2018 the Commission unanimously approved the selection of Tyburski as the preferred candidate for the position.

Tyburski will assume the role of Culture, Parks and Recreation Director effective June 26, 2018. He will work on a part-time basis until July 2, 2018.  Current Director Gerry Toner will provide support on a limited basis during the transition period. A welcome reception for Tom will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 5:00pm in the Main Meeting Room of the Simsbury Town Hall.  All are welcome to attend.
