Weather Update – December 23, 2022

The heavy wind and rain activity has led to multiple road closures and power outages. As of 3:00pm, approximately 6% of Eversource customers in town are without power. The Town’s Emergency Management Team, including the Public Works Department, Police Department, and the Volunteer Fire Company worked throughout the day today removing debris where downed wires weren’t involved.

Eversource crews made substantial progress with their make safe and restoration work. To report power outages, call Eversource at 800-286-2000 or report the outage on the Eversource website.

A number of roads are still closed in town.  Residents are reminded to respect road closure signs. Do not remove any barricades that are posted during storm events in order to maintain safety around downed trees or power lines.  If you encounter any fallen power lines, keep a safe distance to avoid live wires. If you encounter a traffic light that is out, please treat the intersection as if there were stop signs.

For residents using generators, take care to ensure that they are installed and functioning properly.  Tips for generator safety can be found here; Eversource offers the following suggestions:

  • Always run the generator outdoors and as far from the house as possible.
  • Make sure the generator is kept away from doors, windows and air vents to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Installing a carbon monoxide detector in your home can help warn you of a buildup of these toxic fumes.
  • Gasoline is highly flammable. Be sure that the generator is turned off before adding fuel.

As a reminder, the State of Connecticut has activated its severe cold weather protocol from 6:00pm on Friday, December 23 through 12:00pm on Monday, December 26, 2022 in anticipation of very low wind chill values during the overnight hours.

It is essential to stay warm and dry, and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Block drafts with pool noodles, towels, or blankets. If you must be outside, dress warmly and be sure to cover your head and hands, and protect yourself from the elements as best as possible. Try to stay inside and please check on elderly family members and neighbors, and never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle.
