POLICE COMMISSION

Regular Meeting

September 8, 2014

 

 

1.         CALL TO ORDER

 

The Regular Meeting of the Police Commission was called to order at 7:06 P.M. in the Police Department Training Room of the Simsbury Town Offices.  Present were Chairman Brendan Walsh, Commissioner Carl Eisenmann, Commissioner Edward Cosgrove, Chief Peter Ingvertsen and Captain Nicholas Boulter.

3.         CORRESPONDENCE

 

Commissioner Cosgrove read the Summary of Letters received since the last Regular Meeting of the Commission on June 9, 2014. (Addendum 1)

 

4.         APPROVAL OF MINUTES

 

Commissioner Eisenmann made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Cosgrove and passed unanimously to approve the minutes of the June 9, 2014 Regular Meeting.  (Addendum 2)

 

5.         PUBLIC AUDIENCE

 

None

 

6.         OLD BUSINESS

 

The Chief provided the Commission with an update on the Town’s efforts to recover the overtime costs incurred after the March 2012 motor vehicle accident where three patrol officers were injured.

 

7.         REPORTS

 

  1.  Chairman’s Report

 

Chairman Walsh reported that the project to improve the safety of pedestrians crossing Hopmeadow Street in the vicinity of Ensign-Bickford Aerospace and Defense is moving forward.

 

  1. Chief’s Report

 

The Chief reported the following to the Commission:

 

The Department is working on a hiring process to replace the vacancies caused by the recent resignation of an officer and the retirement of another officer in the near future.

Chief Ingvertsen provided the Commission with an update on the progress of the three newest officers in the department.  One officer was recently released from field training and another is in the final phase of her field training, both are doing very well.  A third officer who entered the Police Academy in July is doing very well and is scheduled to graduate January.

 

The Department received a Traffic Safety Enforcement grant in the amount of $22,000., which will be used to fund a focused traffic safety enforcement campaign and the cost of two new radar units.   

 

The E-Citation printer brackets have arrived and their cost will be covered by a grant funds.

 

Over 215 seniors were served at the annual Senior Picnic held at Simsbury Farms.  The event was held on a beautiful day and was enjoyed by all who attended.

 

Officer Tim May has been assigned as the new School Resource Officer at the high School.  He was selected through a collaborative process with the Board of Education.

 

On July 20th the Department received its second Accreditation through CALEA.  The conference was attended by Captain Nick Boulter and PFC Tracy Dunne.

 

The Department will again receive State of CT Accreditation on September 11th at the Police Academy in Meriden.  The ceremony will be attended by Chief Ingvertsen, Captain Boulter and PFC Dunne.

 

c.   Consolidated Monthly Reports for May, June and July 2014 (Addendum 3, 4, 5)

 

Chief Ingvertsen noted that this year Simsbury did not have any reported “back to school” vandalism or problems with the buses.

 

8.         NEW BUSINESS

 

Chief Ingvertsen noted that the Department plans to hold another shredding event in the Town Hall parking lot in April of 2015.  The last event was very popular with residents.

 

Captain Boulter reported that he did a presentation on Project lifesaver for the Rotary Club and received a very positive response.  He indicated that he has also reached out to the churches in Town regarding financial support for the program.

9.         AJOURNMENT

 

Commissioner Eisenmann made motion to adjourn at 7:32 P.M. Commissioner Cosgrove seconded the motion.  All were in favor and the motion passed.
