Bird Watching

Simsbury boasts a Great Blue Heron rookery in a wild life sanctuary behind Iron Horse Boulevard. This rookery where herons nest communally is best viewed when the ground is still frozen. It can be accessed from Helen’s Way off Iron Horse Boulevard opposite the parking lot at the end of  Phelps Lane. Walk down Helen’s Way until it ends in a field. Keep going straight through the marshy field along the faint trail. To see the nests, go through the tree line and into a marshier area as far as you feel comfortable.

The Simsbury Land Trust also conducts frequent bird walks primarily in the fall and spring. Call 860-651-8773 or go to the website for more information: simsburylandtrust.org.

Great Pond State Park is an excellent place to bird watch as is the Simsbury Farms Golf Course which is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary System.
