Fishing

Fishing:  For those interested in fishing in Simsbury, there are some excellent choices including the famed Farmington River, Great Pond and Grimes Brook. The Farmington River, rivaling some western waters for its fly fishing quality, is supported by a bottom release reservoir, providing cold water year round. The river sustains a great population of wild fish and is the highest concentration of trout in the state per square mile. The river is heavily stocked with adult trout, averaging 12+inches.  20+inch trout are caught on a regular basis.

Trout fishing is also available at Stratton Brook State Park on Route 309. It is one of 11 places designated by the state as a Trout Park. Designed to enhance trout fishing opportunities for young and novice anglers as well as for those with mobility challenges, the park is stocked frequently, generally between Opening Day and Memorial Day. Although the Trout Parks have more fish, the daily limit has been reduced to two fish per day to spread the catch among more anglers.

Fishing licenses are available at Simsbury Town Hall or at Upcountry Sports in Canton, their website is www.farmingtonriver.com.  For information about fishing in the Simsbury area, find a guide at www.orvis.com and www.bissieux.com  860-759-4464 (the French Fly Fisherman).
