MINUTES

April 26, 2021

 

On April 26, 2021 the Simsbury Youth Services Advisory Board met via ZOOM and livestreamed on Simsbury Community Television.

Present: Tom Tyburski, Rachael Loveland, Alexander Lee, Kyla Lorden &Laurel Harrington.

Not Present: Kim Lawlor, Todd Kushman, Jovin Girard & Trevor Brittell, Jack Williams

Roll call was held. Pledge of Allegiance was completed & the meeting was called to order at 2:17 PM.  

No Public Audience Comments were submitted ahead of today’s Youth Service Advisory Board meeting.

Action Items:

1: Discussed Spring programming “Be KIND to Your MIND.” Explained upcoming two night presentation “Coping with Uncertainty” and program agenda to discuss managing feelings of anxiety, hopelessness and uncertainty in time of COVID with a focus on coping skills and managing these feelings. Adult presentation is Tuesday, May 25, 2021 7-8:30 PM, and adolescent presentation is Wednesday, May 26, 2021 6:30-8. The adult portion of the presentation will be recorded for future reference.

2: Reviewed swag items and pamphlets that will be provided to program participants. Reviewed stress balls, slime, bag & pamphlets provided in the “Be Kind to Your Mind” program bag.

3: Spoke about different avenues of advertisement. R. Loveland to email flyers to board members for further distribution amongst social media pages, email blasts and school staff.

4: Current School Issues: Overall agreement that mental health remains the key focus. Students have no other issues to report.  

5: Discussed student A. Lee will be graduating and his position will need to be filled. Encouraged current students and staff on board to begin thinking about those they know what would be interested in joining the Youth Advisory Board.

Reports:

1: Simsbury Social Services: Rachael Loveland reports that the Social Services Department is working on several different programs. The Youth Service Bureau is formulating some different virtual programs including a “Seeing Through the Vape” a two-night Zoom presentation for parents and students about the vaping craze, upcoming Self-Care & Mindfulness Series for teens held virtually, a virtual “Home Alone Safety Class”, and Family Fun Night take-home kits.

            “Seeing Through the Vape”: May 18 (parent night) & May 20 (teen night) 6:30-7:30

            “Self-Care & Mindfulness”: Monday’s, 6:00-6:45, Starts May 3, Ends May 24

            “Home Alone Safety Class”: Tuesday, June 1:, 4:30-5:30

            “Family Fun Night”: Tie-Dye Kits- Request by May 4th

2: SPD School Resource Officers: No report.

3: Recreation Department: Tom Tyburski reports that summer activities will be coming back. Camp numbers will be increased with the plan to keep campers in their pods. Pool information will be coming shortly, unsure if there will be changes from last year’s protocol or not.

4: Student Updates: No updates from the students.

Next Meeting: Monday, October 11, 2021- Columbus Day- Will have to be cancelled and rescheduled.

Having no further business to come before the Board,. Meeting adjourned at 2:43 PM.
