SIMSBURY RECYCLING COMMITTEE
TOWN HALL OFFICES – Room 103
Minutes - Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

I. Call to Order
Lori Fernand, Chairman called the meeting to order at 7:32 pm

II. Introduction of new members Jay Devivo and Janice Kern
Members Mary Turner, Nancy Thoma and Jim Ray introduced themselves to new member Janice Kern.  Jay Devivo was absent due to illness.

III. Election of Chair and Secretary
Nancy Thoma nominated Mary Turner for Chairmanship which was seconded by Jim Ray.  The motion was approved unanimously.  Lori nominated Janice as secretary, and Mary seconded the nomination, which was approved unanimously.

IV. Annual meeting schedule
After review of the meeting schedule by all a motion was made by Mary and seconded by Janice to approve the meeting schedule for 2013.  The motion carried.

V. Approval of Minutes: February and March 2012
After review of the February and March 2012 minutes Lori moved to approved.  The motion was seconded and passed unanimously approved

VI. Correspondence and Recycling News
Articles referring to rededication of the Swap Shoppe were published in Simsbury Life and the Valley Press.

Lori inquired about future volunteers.  Mary reported Troop 174 has been invited to volunteer along with Civitan.  An adult is required to accompany anyone under the age of 18.

VIII. Website
Lori reported there was a new town web page.  Updates to the officers and members of the Recycling Committee will be done.  Still needed are proper links to the Swap Shoppe.

A discussion about Freecycle and how to get onto the web page took place.  It was determined that a Yahoo account is necessary.

IX. New Business
1. Recycling Award
A motion was made by Nancy and seconded to nominate Welden Hardware for their effort in battery recycling.  The motion carried unanimously.  The award will be presented at the April 22 Board of Selectmen meeting.

2. Cancellation of Nike Reuse a Shoe
  Lori received a letter from Evelyn Golden which reported that Nike has discontinued the program as it had been run in the past due to cost.
  Former member Lonni Schulz brought to the recycling committee a program involving discarded sneakers. A discussion about deciding whether to continue collecting and distributing sneakers for a different program took place.  Michelle Harrington is involved with Soles 4 Souls.  Nancy said she will invite her to attend our next meeting.  Lori will update Jan Manchester as to the status of the program.

3. Discussion of Annual Plan
An assessment of the town’s recycling efforts needs to be done.  The goal was set at 58% by 2024.  The committee will look for assessment tools to identify further efforts in recycling.  Janice offered to set up Face book in an effort to look for best practices, etc.  Recycling “Tip of the week” could be posted on Face book as well as Simsbury patch.

X. Adjournment:
A motion to adjourn at 8:33 pm was made by Mary and seconded by Nancy. The motion carried.
