SIMSBURY RECYCLING COMMITTEE
TOWN HALL OFFICES – ROOM 103
Minutes for Thursday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Call to Order:
Chair, Mary Turner called the meeting to order at 6:36 p.m.

• Present: Dave Chase, Lori Fernand, Rosemary Fusco, Carol Miller, Claudia Szerakowski and Mary Turner. Guests: Hartford Courant reporter - Savannah Mul.

• Approval of Minutes: May 2014
Rosemary Fusco made a motion to approve the May Minutes with corrections. Claudia Szerakowski seconded the motion. The motion carried.

• Election of Recycling Committee Chair
Carol Miller nominated Mary Turner for Chair of the Recycling Committee. Claudia seconded. The motion carried unanimously.

• Election of Recycling Committee Secretary/Vice Chair 
Lori Fernand nominated Rosemary Fusco for Secretary/Vice Chair. Claudia seconded that motion. The motion carried unanimously.

• Correspondence and Recycling News

• Mary suggested we do a survey on compost material. She asked the members to track their table scrap by the gallon over a period of one month or 2 weeks.

• Claudia brought in a printout of "Single Stream Recycling" from the East Windsor town website. A discussion pursued as to utilizing similar icons for the Household Circular

• Reports:

 Recycling Committee Rebate Budget

The Recycling Committee's requested from the Board of Selectmen approval of $7,000 from the rebate paid to the Town by the recycling collectors operating in Simsbury. That request covers:

o $4,000 Promotional Literature
o $1,500 Street Banner and Stand-Alone Sign
o $1,000 Recycling Day Celebration
o $ 500 For 2 events, one held in fall 2014 and the second in spring 2015

The Board approved unanimously the request

 Swap Shoppe

Mary passed out the schedule to members. The center is going well with many items coming in as well as being adopted by residents.

 Banning of Styrofoam

Mary reported she spoke to both Lydia Tedone and Susan Salina about putting the item on their agenda. Lori reported the Girl Scouts would like to address the Board of Education on the banning of Styrofoam.

 Household Circular

Lori reported Mary Murphy has designed the face of the circular. A detailed discussion of the design and wording of the circular took place. Lori will send a draft within a few weeks to the membership for review and suggestions. It is hoped that the circular will be published on post-consumer paper.

•Old Business:

Lori reminded the membership of Macky McCleary's presentation "Let's Talk Trash" which is to be held on Monday, June 30th from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Eno Memorial Hall – Youth Room.

A motion was made to adjourn at 7:45 p.m. and seconded. The motion carried.
