SIMSBURY RECYCLING COMMITTEE
TOWN HALL OFFICES -- ROOM 103
MINUTES for Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 6:30 PM

Call to order: Mary Turner, Chair, called the meeting to order at 6:35 PM

Present:

Lori Fernand, Rosemary Fusco, Carol Miller, Alexandra Rice, Claudia Szerakowski and Mary Turner.

Guests present:

Jonas Strimaitis and Evelyn Golden.

Approval of Minutes for Sept.2014:

Lori made a motion to approve the minutes, with corrections, and Carol seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Correspondence and Recycling News:

It was noted that about 120 million pounds of plastic bottles are recycled every year.

A motion was made, and carried, to hold an information event at the Town Community Farm in Simsbury. This to be held on November 15th 2014. The purpose is to educate the public on recycling and composting. Jonas Strimaitis, distributor of composting products will be a speaker and advisor of these products at the event. Also, Evelyn Golden, CEO of Signature Marketing, will be available to talk about composting products. The subject of backyard composting was deemed to be an interesting subject. News and press release to be distributed throughout the town.

A discussion was held on curb side pick up of composted material. Bins to be provided by waste company.

Reports:

Swap Shoppe; Last session was Oct 25th. A very good and active year was reported.

Household circular:

A review of the circular was discussed and it was decided to revise the text and add a graph to inform residents of Simsbury the importance of recycling.

Old business:

Committee members discussed their activities regarding their personal composting.

New Business:

2015 Meeting Calendar was approved by all.

2014 Recycling Award: A Brief discussion was held for nomination for the recycling award. A motion was made by Claudia and seconded by Alexandra to have award recipient/recipients to be announced at the BOS meeting on Nov 10th.

Textile Recycling;

Mary Turner presented for discussion correspondence from the town regarding Textile recycling. CROG has approved Bay State Textile Recycling for CT, and Simsbury has approved of this organization, also. All useable clothes and textiles can be recycled in any condition. After discussion, a motion was made by Carol and seconded by Claudia to accept the approval of the town of Simsbury to use Bay State Textile Recycling. The motion carried.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made at 8:20PM by Claudia and seconded by Rosemary. The motion carried.
