Age Friendly Community Subcommittee

Regular Meeting - Thursday, December 7, 2023 – 2:30 P.M.

Eno Memorial Hall – Old Court Room IN PERSON

MINUTES Subject to Approval

Jan Beatty, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m.

PRESENT: Jan Beatty, Cheryl Cook (phone), Ed LaMontagne, Libby Easton May, Mike Jennings, Diana Yeisley, Katie Robbins

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE was recited.

PUBLIC AUDIENCE/PUBLIC COMMENT: None received.

ACCEPTANCE OF MINUTES: Regular Meeting on 11/2/2023

Ms. Yeisley moved to accept the minutes. Ms. Robbins seconded. All voted in favor.

OLD BUSINESS

Focus Groups:

UCONN Center for Aging – No contact since last meeting.

AARP Focus Group Booklet – Ms. Beatty will send to Laura Haynes at UCONN

Potential sites for Focus Groups – Dr. Owen L. Murphy Apartments, Powder Forest, houses of orship, Simsbury Chamber of Commerce, McLean, April 9th Aging and Disability Forum.

Would like to concentrate focus groups on individuals age 50+

Focus Groups to be conducted in April of 2024.

 Senior Voices:

It was decided to eliminate the Senior Voices in favor of the Focus Groups, although it was discussed that shortened surveys could reach homebound older adults through Books to Your Door program

Stakeholders/Community Partners:

To date eight stakeholder meetings have been completed, the results of which follow:

Ms. Beatty – Completed McLean and Simsbury Library

Ms. Cook – Completed Simsbury Culture, Parks and Recreation and Simsbury Performing Arts Center. Will do Simsbury Housing Authority and Main Street Partnership

Ms. Easton-May – Completed For All Ages. Will do Simsbury Volunteer Fire Department and Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance.

Mr. LaMontagne – Completed Simsbury Social Services, Simsbury Senior Center, Belden Forest and Simsbury Police Department. Will do Granby Simsbury Chamber of Commerce.

NEW BUSINESS

Collation of data from stakeholder meetings:

Ms. Beatty will compile this information utilizing the Housing Subcommittee format.

Scheduling/Running of Focus Groups:

It was discussed that during the month of April 2024 would be the best time to conduct the focus groups.

Information to Town Commissions:

A discussion was held as to what the subcommittee should send and when. It was determined that the a one-page intro should be utilized and distributed to town commissions in mid-April after the budget season.

OTHER

AARP Session:

AARP will be conducting another zoom session on December 12th from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. This session is titled, “Guaranteed Income Pilot”.

Community Challenge Grant

The AARP Community Challenge Grant will be coming out on January 9th.The grant information will be reviewed to determine appropriateness.

Age-Friendly Community Logo

Mr. Armbruster from AARP approved the use of the Age Friendly Community logo. Ms. Yeisley will ask Ms. Marshall to put the logo on the Age Friendly Community subcommittee web site.

There being no further business, Ms. Beatty adjourned the meeting at 3: 35 pm.
