Child Passenger Safety Week

National Child Passenger Safety Week

September 15 - 21, 2013

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for children age 1 to 13.

Child car seats significantly reduce the risk of fatal injury and reduce injuries.

The Simsbury Police Department suggests that all parents and caregivers have their children’s car seats checked for proper installation.  In 2011, an estimated 123,000 children under age 13 were injured in traffic crashes (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

Child car seats are most effective when installed and used correctly.  Here are some important tips for proper car-seat selection and installation:

  • Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size.  Choose a seat that fits in your vehicle, and use it every time.

  • Always refer to your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions; read the vehicle owner’s manual on how to install the car seat using the seat belt or LATCH system and check height and weight limits.

  • Keep your child in the car seat for as long as possible as long as the child fits within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements.

We encourage all parents and caregivers to reach out and have a certified technician inspect the car seat and show correct installation and use to ensure that their children are getting the very best protection and are in the right seat for their ages and size.   For more information or an inspection appointment, contact Simsbury Police Department Child Passenger Safety Technicians at (860) 658-3180.  Officers Tracy Dunne, Brad Chase, Elizabeth Maher, Lauren Devin, Dispatcher Johanna Camacho or Records Clerk Elizabeth Sagan are available to assist you.
