Counterfeit Checks Alert

Check fraud and counterfeiting are among the fastest growing problems affecting the nation, producing estimated annual losses of $10 billion.  These losses continue to grow at an alarming rate.

What can you do to ensure that you or your business does not become a victim?

  • If you are an online banking customer review your accounts daily to make certain that all transactions are authorized.
  • One of the most common methods of counterfeiting checks is known as "check washing."  Common household cleaners are used to erase the payee name and dollar amount on good checks so that the check can be altered.  Good checks could be stolen through outgoing mail, places of business and/or the recipient's mailbox.  Keep your check supply secure at all times.
  • Review the balance of all bank statements immediately upon receipt.  If you suspect fraudulent activity notify the bank immediately as well as the police department.
  • Do not use paperwork that has your account numbers or banking information on them as scrap paper.  Protect this information.  Develop the mindset that someone may steal your account information and fraudulently use it.
  • Shred all bank related documents before discarding them.  Criminals have been known to "dumpster dive" or go through the trash looking for valuable account information.  Credit card transactions and convenience checks may provide sensitive information.  Shred them as well.
  • Beware of phone calls requesting account information.  Legitimate banking institutions will never ask for information over the phone that they already have on record.  Just say no!
