Protect Yourself When Looking For a Job Online

“The Overpayment Scam”

The Simsbury Police Department has recently become aware that criminals are targeting individuals searching for employment using the popular websites for employment opportunities.

The “overpayment scam” has become prevalent in various online job communities.  Here’s how it typically works:  The scammer will pose as a potential employer and will reach out with a job offer.  They will ask for your personal identifying information (full name, address, date of birth, bank info, etc.) and send you a check for a large amount of money.  The money may be for “pre-payment” or to buy an item they need (toy, medical equipment, etc.).  The scammer then requests that you cash the check and wire a portion of the money back to them.  They may tell you to keep the rest.  Unfortunately, the check is fake and you become the victim of fraud.  In some cases this can lead to thousands of dollars of lost funds.

The Simsbury Police would like to remind you to remain vigilant when using the internet.  While it can be an invaluable resource it can also lead to fraud and identity theft.  Please remember to protect your personal identifying information (full name, date of birth, social security number, bank account information, etc.).
